ADVISORY NOTICE TO STUDENTS

LPC Distance Learning Undertaking by the (SRA)

The Academy of Tertiary Studies wishes to provide an update on the undertaking by the

Solicitors Regulation Authority, the body that developed and oversees the operation of

the Legal Practice Course (LPC) for the 9-month distance learning or face to face

attendance in the United Kingdom.


Transitional Arrangements:

➯Individuals who began their legal studies before 2021 While the LPC is being

replaced, the SRA acknowledges prior training and allows certain individuals to

qualify through this route. However, the SQE is now the main route to qualify as a

solicitor in England and Wales.


Students who have completed the UK-based Bachelor of Laws (LLB) Degree:

➯Students completing the Degree from the University of London through the

Recognized Teaching Centre (ATS) now have the following options for further legal

studies and Bar Admission through the Following Routes:


1.Bar Vocational Course (BVC): Requires full-time, in-person study in the UK for 9 months,

The Bar Practice Course (BPC) is the qualifying postgraduate course allowing

graduates to prepare for practise as Barristers in England and Wales. It is the

vocational stage of training which you’re required to pass before you can go

on to complete the final practical stage of training or pupillage.


2. Bar Practice Course (BPC): is a postgraduate course designed to prepare

law graduates for practice as Barristers. It is the vocational component barrister training,

following a law degree or law conversion course.


REQUIREMENTS AFTER THE BVC AND BPC

Six-Month Attachment: Following the course, a six-month attachment with a

practicing Attorney in Trinidad and Tobago is required.


Certificate of Fitness: The Trinidad and Tobago Law Association provides

guidelines requirements for obtaining a Certificate of Fitness for admission to

practice. This certificate is essential for being called to the Bar.


3. Legal Education Certificate (LEC): via Hugh Wooding Law School (HWLS), The LEC

provides professional legal training, specifically the Legal Education Certificate

(LEC), to aspiring lawyers from Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Guyana, and

several Eastern Caribbean territories.


REQUIREMENTS AFTER THE LEC

While internships are not mandatory, they are highly recommended for practical

experience and can be beneficial in building your legal career. Many law students

use internships to gain real-world experience and explore different areas of law

before committing to a specific career path.


The Academy Of Tertiary Studies Undertaking:

The Academy of Tertiary Studies is the Recognized Teaching Centre For the

Bachelor of Laws Degree, The Certificate of Higher Education in Common Law

(CertHE) and The Graduate Diploma in Commercial Law.
